Social media is, of course, big news in the business world. If you’re a business owner or business leader, it’s not surprising if you’re feeling overwhelmed by everything you see, hear and read about how to get ahead with social media. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be as difficult as it seems, especially if you ignore some of the buzz and hype, and focus on the few things that really make a difference.
In 2012, Forbes magazine included me at #5 in their list of social media influencers in the world (and #1 in Australia) in my area of expertise. I’m particularly pleased because the criteria they used weren’t just about the number of followers (reach), but included the ability to engage a community (resonance) and how it fit their particular circumstances (relevance). Those three things together – reach, resonance and relevance – go together to create influence.
Getting Started with Social Media
There are a lot of resources – on my Web site and elsewhere – about social media, and it can be difficult to know where to start. I should warn you that my approach to it is different from what many other people advise. I want you to be seen as a leader and an authority, not just yet another business. This means you have to be willing to position your expertise, build credibility, generate content regularly, and be active as a “consultant” to your customers and clients.
Here are some articles I’ve written about this – to give you a flavour of this approach:

Still with me? Good!
As you will have noticed, my focus is very much on positioning yourself as an influential authority. This starts with your blog, and this two-minute video will show you how to set up your blog and other social media tools:
The next step is to create high-quality content and distribute it through your entire network. Watch my slide show “Content Marketing Made Easy” here – it summarises the process:
Finally, I need to tell you that I’ve got firm opinions and views about how you get to the top of Google – and it’s not the typical “search engine optimization” stuff! Watch this webinar recording “Seven Secrets For Boosting Your Google Ranking” for more:
If you’re willing to do all this stuff above, then I think we can work together. Please explore the other resources here, and get in touch with me.

Conference Presentation: Social Media Leadership
Most business owners and leaders know that social media is important, but don’t know how to use it well. The real opportunity for leaders is social media leadership, where you can position yourself and your organisation as the leader – not just part of the crowd – in your social networks. In this practical and interactive presentation, Gihan shows you the five key principles of social media leadership, and how to apply them in your business.
Audio Program: Social Media Leadership
If you’re a business owner or business leader, it’s not surprising if you’re feeling overwhelmed by everything you see, hear and read about how to get ahead with social media. The good news is that it doesn’t have to be as difficult as it seems, especially if you ignore the hype and focus on the few things that really make a difference. The key is to focus on activities that prove you’re an expert in solving your customers’ problems. In other words, use social media to magnify your expertise and become an authority.
Audio Program: Lead With Value
In a crowded, cluttered marketing world, the problem isn’t lack of information; rather, it’s that there is too much information. Customers and clients want their problems solved, so they search for experts by looking for people who provide value, not just advertising. That’s why content marketing is a key tool for organisations large and small. In brief, content marketing is about creating material that teaches and sells. Your goal is to lead all your marketing by providing high-value content that helps solves your clients’ problems.
Build Your Social Media Leadership and Influence
Most business owners and business leaders spend too much time, with too little return, on social media. Usually that’s because they are engaging in social media activities that might feel good but don’t bring results. The key is to focus on activities that demonstrate your leadership and influence. This report, which I wrote with Citrix, shows you how to stand out – not just fit in – using social media.

Build a Powerful Online Presence in Less Than One Hour a Week
As social media continues to grow in popularity, smart business owners realize it’s an important marketing tool for their business. However, many of them are becoming increasingly worried about the amount of time it takes to engage actively on all the social media channels available. Fortunately, you can build the foundations of an effective social media presence in as little as an hour a week. This report, which I wrote with Citrix, will show you how.
Online Course: Genius Content Creation Ideas
So you’ve got great ideas in your head, and it’s easy for you to share those ideas verbally with clients and audiences. But you might struggle to put these ideas into writing … or video … or audio. Don’t worry – you’re not alone! Many experts struggle with organising their material for readers and viewers – especially for material they put online, where people have tiny attention spans. That’s why I have created this online program, which gives you some simple, powerful structures for organising your content to present it in a compelling, engaging way.
This course is available exclusively to eGurus members.
Online Course: Social Media Intelligence
Managing your social media success takes time, and there are many tools and apps to simplify this process. The problem is that many of them are aimed at large businesses, Internet marketers, big marketing teams, or social media consultants. If you use the wrong tool, it can cost you time, money and focus; and you can end up working on the wrong things in your social media marketing! That’s why I have created this online program, which brings you hand-picked high-quality tools, Web sites and applications to boost your social media success.
This course is available exclusively to eGurus members.
Online Course: Blogging In No Time At All
Blogging should be an essential part of your online marketing plan. But it takes time to keep blogging regularly. One way to make this easier is through “content curation”, which is finding and sharing other people’s material with your market. When you publish a combination of your own blog posts and this high-quality material from other people, you build your reputation, connect more frequently with your market, and position your business as a trusted authority. This online program shows you where to find high-quality material you can re-use (legally!) in your blog.
Online Course: 10-Minute Reputation Builders
Most of us have built our life-long reputation with lots of small steps, not a few giant leaps. The same is true on the Internet. You don’t HAVE to spend half your life on Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and on-line forums in order to build a credible on-line reputation (although some people do!)
This on-line course sends you daily ideas for building your on-line reputation. Each items takes no more than 10 minutes at a time, so you can do them whenever you have a small window of spare time – waiting for somebody to turn up for a meeting, waiting in line for a coffee, taking a break between bigger tasks, and so on. If you’re really keen, you might even set aside a 10-minute window in your calendar every day!
