Shai Reshef: An ultra-low-cost college degree

Online educationEducation, especially formal education, is expensive. Or at least, it was expensive. The Internet is now making it more affordable than ever before, especially when people like Shai Reshef dedicate their lives to providing low-cost education to everybody. Watch his fascinating TED Talk here:

The talk includes this inspiring glimpse into the future:

“A new era is coming, an era that will witness the disruption of the higher education model as we know it today, from being a privilege for the few to becoming a basic right, affordable and accessible for all.”

Stirring stuff, to be sure. And I’m confident they are on the right path.

But that’s not the only thing that excites me about this project. One of the most inspiring features of his “University of the People” is that it’s not a charity. It’s underpinned by a business model that intends to make it financially sustainable. This means the model itself is sound, and it’s a perfect example of how our fast, flat and free world is transforming something even as entrenched and traditional as higher education.
