There’s a common myth that experienced business leaders are dinosaurs from a bygone era, so “of course” it’s inevitable they will get disrupted by younger, more diverse, more tech-savvy, “new” thinkers. Or so the story goes.
But it’s not true. There are many experienced, established leaders who do have the right mindset to lead now, and are more than willing to adapt to the new way of doing business.
The problem isn’t their intent; it’s their assumed competence. It’s not that they don’t know a lot (they do); it’s just that some of those things aren’t true anymore. They used to be true, so it’s natural to believe they are still true.
There’s no reason you can’t be successful in the future, but it might mean letting go of some of your old beliefs. Learn from the past if it’s serving you to build for the future, but otherwise let it go.
